What to Expect in From Senator Jeff Flake’s Upcoming Senate Speech

Most people, politicians included, are great at holding their tongue when it comes to criticizing their boss. That is until they have nothing to fear and nothing to lose. This attitude usually surfaces around an upcoming departure from a job post. This is the case for Senator Jeff Flake.

With Flake on his way out very soon, many are anxiously awaiting his Senate speech for two reasons – he has nothing to lose and the fact that he is considered to be one of the most honest sitting Senators to date. With a few truths to share and nothing preventing him from sharing, his speech should in no way disappoint, primarily after confirmations surfaced that Senator Flake plans to unleash critical truths that could potentially scar President Trump.

According to NBC News, portions of Senator Flake’s speech have already been shared, wetting many people’s appetite. NBC released the following:

“When a figure in power reflexively calls any press that doesn’t suit him ‘fake news,’ it is that person who should be the figure of suspicion, not the press.”

“Mr. President, it is a testament to the condition of our democracy that our own president uses words infamously spoken by Josef Stalin to describe his enemies.”

If that last excerpt from Flake’s speech was not clear, it appears that Senator Flake is in no subtle way at all making a comparison between President Trump and a past communist dictator.

Flake’s speech appears to go further and is rumored to say the following:

“It bears noting that so fraught with malice was the phrase ‘enemy of the people,’ that even (later Soviet leader) Nikita Khrushchev forbad its use, telling the Soviet Communist Party that the phrase had been introduced by Stalin for the purpose of ‘annihilating such individuals’ who disagreed with the supreme leader.”

Part of Stalin’s legacy was dominating the media by controlling journalists and forcing them to publish and advance his own pro-Stalin literature while simultaneously covering the truth.

Speaking of this control over the media, the rumor is that Flake will add something along the lines of “This alone should be a source of great shame for us in this body, especially those of us in the president’s party. For they are shameful and repulsive statements.”
Flake’s point here may be that Trump wants control over an entire class of weaker Americans. It is no secret that much of what Trump shares is laced with some type of appeal to his loyal followers. One example to look for Wednesday night is Trump’s self-proclaimed Fake News Award.

When speaking with Kasie Hunt of NBC, Flake opened up and shared more about his planned speech, citing his desire for lawmakers to stop “retreating into camps” when it was time to confront the latest moves of President Trump.

“What I am trying to do with this speech is basically trying to nudge the president back where I think that we, as elected officials, ought to be. And I think that that’s a role that I should have as a member of the Senate.”

“We have a balance of power, separated powers here. We shouldn’t be afraid to criticize the president when we think he’s wrong.”

“I don’t think that we should be using the phrase that’s been rejected as too loaded by a Soviet dictator.”

Flake concluded his remarks to NBC by adding that “2017 was a year which saw the truth – objective, empirical, evidence-based truth – more battered and abused than any other time in the history of our country, at the hands of the most powerful figure in our government.”

Perhaps some of Flake’s comments and approaches could be deemed slightly aggressive, but there are undeniable amounts of truth in his speech – at least the parts that have been shared already.

Senator Flake’s message is that our nation is being driven by a former reality TV host who has the intellect of a common man, made worse by the volatile temperament of a toddler. Trump’s negative behavior is somehow protected and justified by many politicians who should have known better and acted. And according to Flake, this makes those politicians derelict in their obligation as lawmakers in this country.
